PUTRAJAYA: The Federal Government will intervene in Johor's policy to maintain the youth age cap at 40, if it is found that the decision was made under "palace influence", says Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

"The palace has no right to interfere. If we found that this is the result of palace interference, then we will cancel the decision," said the Prime Minister after chairing a Bersatu supreme council meeting here on Monday (July 15).

Dr Mahathir said that Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal had not given his official explanation on the issue.

On July 8, Johor announced that it would maintain its categorisation of youth as those between 15 and 40, despite the Federal Government’s move to lower the age limit to 30.

Johor, at the time, joined Selangor and Sarawak in maintaining the youth age cap at 40.

But the following day, the Johor government changed its stand again and said it would lower the youth age limit to 30.

Less than 24 hours later, state Youth, Sports, Entrepreneurship Development and Cooperatives Committee chairman Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali issued another statement, saying Johor would maintain its youth age limit at 40, following “advice from several parties”.
